For more than a century taking a road trip from the United Kingdom into Europe meant getting the little blue “GB” sticker or magnet on your number plate. From September this year however that is ending. The “GB” designation is being replaced by “UK”.
Number plates, as it turns out, are another victim in the painfully long break-up between the UK and EU. Already this year the EU stars have been replaced by the Union Flag on new and replacement number plates.
There has been no official reason given for the change from GB to UK but it’s speculated that it is meant as a sign of solidarity between Britain and Northern Ireland. Whatever the reason, when we are finally able to take post-Covid road trips again, a lot of us are going to need to replace our number plates.
